Phonological Short-term Memory and Vocabulary Development: Further Evidence on the Nature of the Relationship
نویسندگان
چکیده
The nature and generality of the developmental association between phonological short-term memory and vocabulary knowledge was explored in two studies. Study 1 investigated whether the link between vocabulary and verbal memory arises from the requirement to articulate memory items at recall or from earlier processes involved in the encoding and storage of the verbal material. Four-year-old children were tested on immediate memory measures which required either spoken recall (nonword repetition and digit span) or recognition of a sequence of nonwords. The phonological memory±vocabulary association was found to be as strong for the serial recognition as recall-based measures, favouring the view that it is phonological short-term memory capacity rather than speech output skills which constrain word learning. In Study 2, the association between phonological memory skills and vocabulary knowledge was found to be strong in teenaged as well as younger children, indicating that phonological memory constraints on word learning remain signi®cant throughout childhood. The relationship between working memory and L2 reading comprehension
Since an important role for working memory has been found in the first language acquisition (e.g., Daneman, 1991; Daneman & Green, 1986; Waters & Caplan, 1996), research on the role of working memory is emerging as an area of concern for second language acquisition (e.g., Atkins & Baddeley, 1998; Miyake & Freidman, 1998; Robinson, 1995, 2002, ...

Introduction: This research was planned to determine some verbal-auditory skills (verbal-auditory short memory and phonological awareness) that have the closest relationship with speech and language development in 5-year-old children. Method: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 400 children of pre-school classes affiliated to Education and Welfare organizations in Semnan city were select...
متن کاملWord clustering effect on vocabulary learning of EFL learners: A case of semantic versus phonological clustering
The aim of this study is to determine the effect of word clustering method on vocabulary learning of Iranian EFL learners through a case of semantic versus phonological clustering. To this effect, 80 homogeneous students from four intermediate classes at an English institute in Torbat e Heydariyeh participated in this research. They were assigned to four groups according to semantic versus phon...
متن کاملDoes phonological short-term memory causally determine vocabulary learning? Toward a computational resolution of the debate
The relationship between nonword repetition ability and vocabulary size and vocabulary learning has been a topic of intense research interest and investigation over the last two decades, following the demonstration that nonword repetition accuracy is predictive of vocabulary size (Gathercole & Baddeley, 1989). However, the nature of this relationship is not well understood. One prominent accoun...

This study used keyword method during encoding information in transferring information from short term memory to make the retrieval easier. For this purpose, 50 adult female elementary students were chosen to participate in this study. This study required two groups of learners (control and experimental groups). The experimental group enjoyed some special flashcards which each of them involved ...
